On Nanny's birthday, Nanny asks
"Is Matai sitting up yet? Isn't it about time he was?"
And so on a lark, we sit him in the highchair
Where he kicks and smiles as though he'd been doing it forever
To our great surprise!

First chocolate icecream
In the sunshine at Pyrmont Park.
Matai is so excited by the taste sensation
That he leaps into it and grabs it with both hands,
Squeezing icecream through his fingers;
Clutching it with a vice-like grip.

Now that he's become Mister Separation Anxiety
Mummy gets to wondering whether she should be picking him up more, or less
When his crying quickly escalates to hysteria
And reads that bubbies should Definitely be picked up when they cry through fear.
On freshly noticing A Day In The Life of Matai
It suddenly becomes apparent
That fear is at every turn
When it consists of a big brother who likes to:
Poke, kiss, lean on, pat roughly, and ram with his toy pram or tricycle...
Poor Matai !

Sees Matai quiet in wonder at taking the tram across the city.
Later, at Gen's 21st birthday party, dressed like a fluffy teddy bear,
He enjoys multiple cuddles and grins nipple at Mummy,
Wiggling in everybody's arms until finally falling asleep
To the thudding bass of a James Brown tribute band.
